“I find their humility endearing”

...says singer and judge Sonu Nigam about the current breed of Indian Idol aspirants
Shirin Abbas
Lucknow, October 25: “Aap sur ko pakad hi nahin pa rahein hain. You are a great entertainer. You have a very sweet smile but you are not meant to be a singer. I know this is going to hurt and you may cry when you go home but I cannot let you go forward in this show. Sorry, you have to go” That’s Sonu Nigam for you, turning down yet another Indian Idol aspirant. For a fraction of a second the camera flashes on his face, taut with tension, biting the lip as he shakes his head and calls out, “Next.”

Being judge on Indian Idol the second time round isn’t any easier for Sonu Nigam than the first. “It was different the last time round, we had people who were rude, who stamped their feet and were boisterous. With Indian Idol II, post the success of Abhijeet Sawant and Amit Sana, Rahul Vaidya and Prajakta Shukre, I think people are aware what a big platform it is. So there’s much less of the earlier bratty behaviour,” says Sonu Nigam.” The requests are there but they are laced with an endearing humility as they request us to listen to one more song, give them one more chance.”

The quiet, unassuming Sonu is touched by the near adulation with which he is regarded. But he hasn’t let it go to his head. “Once a person begins to think he has it all he tends to become complacent. A wee bit of insecurity is good. When you believe you are the best and can’t get any better, it becomes very dangerous for you since there are no longer any more challenges to take on. You tend to sit back. And that’s when you are hit the hardest. Wo attitude aapke liye khatarnak ho jata hai.”

He says it is hardest for him to turn down a contestant but says he takes his duty very seriously. While the other judges keep the overall personality of the contestant in mind, for Sonu, it is only the voice that matters. “We are giving them a very big platform. we have to be very sure of making the right choice,” he says.

**wow... i really really like him..have i ever told you that?? =) this once again proves is own humility, that makes HIM so endearing, and his goodness...that despite being so famous and talented, he doesnt have a pinch of snobbishness in him...=) Love ya love ya love ya sonu!!!
