Lewd: Sonu Nigam won’t sing Salman’s new song

It is perhaps the first ever salvo fired by a playback singer against a lyricist in Hindi cinema.

Sonu Nigam took a firm resolve on Sunday and refused to lend his voice to “tacky, double entendre laden lyrics” of a song penned by Sameer. The song is for a forthcoming David Dhawan film, starring Salman Khan.

“The song had cheap lyrics, like ‘Shaadi ki pehli raat, maine aisa maara dhakka… maine doodh pee liya…’ I messaged the music composer, Himesh Reshammiya, stating that the lyrics are embarrassing and inappropriate, and I cannot sing the song,” said Nigam. “Himesh understood my predicament. He did not persist and lauded my decision.”

Meanwhile, Reshammiya maintains, “not recording such a song yet”, while Sameer insists that the “lyrics were not penned by me”. Nigam however adds that the female version has already been recorded. He restrained from naming the vocalist.

Songs from David Dhawan’s films have been known to court controversy through the ‘90s. His films raised public outcry on account of their vulgar or sub-standard songs — prominent among them being Sarkai lo khatiya (Raju Babu) and Teri nani mari toh (Coolie No 1).

Nigam concluded, “We need to realise that a voice enjoys a certain degree of sanctity. It is the singer’s responsibility to preserve that purity and not let his listeners down.”
