Becoming a celebrity is not child's play.

** Woohooo!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE this article!!! And you know, i had no idea that he turned down an award for a song...of course now that i think about it, it sounds just like him, being humble and modest and refusing to take his proper credit, remember that time he said, he's not crazy about awards, accept them like a gift and move on, blah blah...i always remember that part for some reason, because i think it makes a lot of sense...to do what you love and believe in, not becaus you want money and awards and all that...

well this is a real nice article about him...read on...and enjoy!

SMART BOX
Specially Sonu

Five tracks that made Sonu Nigam one of
India’s favourite singers

• Achcha sila dia, his jumpstart of early 90’s

• Deewana, the romantic title track of his second album

• Ab Mujhe Raat Din, another favourite from Deewana

• Zindagi Maut na Ban of Sarfarosh for which he turned down an award
• Kal Ho Na Ho, which got him the megastar status of today

In a star-crazy country as ours, becoming a celebrity is not child’s play. And becoming the star that the newest starlets look up to takes a lot of work. So, let us admit, brawls with fellow singers and controversies aside, Delhi’s apna munda Sonu Nigam, has all the reasons to be flashing his disarming smile.

He has a track in almost all the big films happening in the industry and though his Chanda Ki Doli was nothing spectacular, it still had his name flashed on all the leading music channels. If that’s not enough, two of the former Indian Idol contestants, Amit Sana and Rahul Vaidya seem to pour out a good bit of Sonu’s style in their debut albums.

“It is a great responsibility,” he responds. “These guys were very good and it was pretty sad that only one made it to the top.” It is no surprise that he does not mind being raised to the same pedestal as that of those he looks upto. Being compared to Mohd. Rafi and Kishore Kumar as ‘normal’ for him now. Surprisingly, the present judge of Indian Idol thinks looks is definitely not a key for success. It’s only talent.

“I think beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. One does not have to be the right shade of black or the right shade of white to be beautiful. If you are not beautiful inside, it doesn’t matter what you are from the outside.” We’re glad that most of female fans don’t think like him. So, what does it take to impress Sonu Nigam? “I don’t know,” he says.

“I think being humble is a major factor but then, even arrogant people impress you at times.” And don’t try to press him for time. “I think it’s cute when people come for auditions but won’t leave when we tell them that we’re not impressed.” Talk about being a cold-blooded judge. Sonu Nigam has come a long way from his jumpstart track, Achcha Sila Dia from the film Bewafa Sanam in the early 90’s. In a time when playback singers were known only by their voices, he brought out his own album, Tu starring Bipasha Basu. But he became a household name in India as the host of the musical show, Sa Re Ga Ma.

He was loved so much as the host that after he left, numerous callers begged the makers of the show to bring him back. But there was no looking back for him. From being a host of the Sa Re Ga Ma to being a judge of Indian Idol, he has sung his heart. “I have loved every song I have sung and have been my greatest critic,” he says.

Ask him to name a favourite and he says, “I don’t have any favourites but there is one song that I cannot sing again… the title track of Kal Ho Na Ho. I get too emotional when I try to sing it. It brings back a lot of memories.” Love him or loathe him, Sonu Nigam and his voice have made one thing very clear. He is here to stay... and to rule.

Sonu Nigam sure is churning out album after album! His recent `Chanda Ki Doli` is barely out of public memory and he is already ready with yet another album.

Titled `Kajara Nite`, the first video from this album to hit the airwaves is `Kajara Mohabbat Wala`. It has been performed by Sonu Nigam and Alisha Chinoy. And adding a dash of glamour to the video is Bollywood belle, Diya Mirza. It has been choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant.

The trend of casting Bollywood stars in music videos was popularized by Adnan Sami who managed to rope in everyone from Rani to Raveena to Amisha for his videos. Perhaps Sonu didnt want to be left behind!

** YAYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait for another mind-blowing album...Kajara Nite...sounds highly interesting...i wonder what kind of songs it'll have...oh well, let's see...
